At this particular property, the swimming pool’s infinity edge catch basin is only 18 inches down from the pool level. This is because there was an existing set-back ,applied by the City of Moraga, that required that the pool not touch the slope. It was then set back off the hillside and raised 18 inches because the developer did not engineer the slope to make it stable enough to support the swimming pool.

Alderland worked with the city planning department, our engineering team, and the homeowner, to solve this unforeseen challenge. Our team went above and beyond to develop a solution to get this project redesigned and on to construction.

The accompanying images feature, among other things, an infinity edge swimming pool. The attraction of this type of swimming pool design is that the water appears to vanish into the horizon with amazing results. This effect is achieved by the bringing the water level up to just above the infinity edge, which allows it to then spill over into a catch basin. The drop is typically 2 to 3 feet to give the illusion that there is no edge on one side of the pool. continued-

When is an pool engineer really needed?

This is a very important questions, it could mean the difference between a strong pool that never moves and a pool that continues to settle, crack, leak, break pipes, becomes unlevel. Not all pools need special engineering but some do. Here’s some of the conditions to look for when evaluating a pool location and if you should be talking to an engineer.

Is the pool on a slope or a hill?
Was the pool pad created out of fill soil?
Is the pool longer than 40 ft?
Is the pool closer than 15ft. from a slope?
Is the pool being cut into the slope?
Is the pool a vanishing edge next to a slope.
Does the area have history of ground movement?
Will the pool shell be exposed 3’ above ground?
Does the pool have any special features that are unique?
Does the pool have a large waterslide?

These are some but not all the conditions that should have a soils engineer and structural engineer evaluating your project. Better safe then sorry.

My project was incredibly complex and the Alder team brought the expertise, hard work and craftsmanship necessary to complete it in a timely and extremely high quality fashion. After interviewing a couple other contractors that I didn't believe were up to the task, I turned to Houzz to find a group with great reviews and the necessary experience to complete our project. I'm really happy I found Alder and detailed examples of their work on Houzz. Our house has a large hill behind our existing swimming pool. The Alder team installed a 100+ foot pre-fabricated water slide that runs down the hill and into the pool. In addition, on top of the hill, they graded out a flat spot to build a bocce court with beautiful arbors on either side of the court. Lastly, they added landscaping across the hillside to make everything blend together with the landscaping that existed on all sides of the construction project. Throughout the job, Don and his excellent foreman, Jose, were very responsive, customer focused and professional. I've done a lot of construction projects in my life and was prepared for the typical over-budget, past-due project on this one, especially given the complexity of it.
